Enlisted 27th Australian Infantry Battalion, AIF, 6 Aug 1917 aged only 16 yoa SERN 20765 Mother died when he was only 3yoa. Step-mother, May, signed as NoK, giving permission for him to enlist, without his father’s prior knowledge.

Embarked SS “Canberra” 16 Nov 1917

War Service: transferred to 15th Field Coy, Aust. Engineers, as Sapper.
Served on Western Front— stationed Rouelles, (near Le Havre) France. Hospitalised twice in Colchester UK
Awarded British War Medal, Victory Medal. Unable to trace whereabouts of medals
Returned “Port Melbourne” 21 Aug 1919. Discharged Sep 1919

WWII

Served with 8th Field Coy, Aust Military Forces from 23 Feb 1939. Promoted Cpl July 1939

Died at Greenwich Hospital, 18 October 1978 of carcinoma of larynx. He willed his remains to medical research. Ref University of NSW
