Jack and Roland Brett’s names on the South face of the Mosman War Memorial.

At their leisure

The Allport family donated photographs to Local Studies at Barry O’Keefe Library. They include the family on outings just after the war. Of particular interest are images of Jack Allport soaring through the air from the high diving platform at Clifton Gardens, and relaxing with his brother Brett, family and friends by the foreshore. Also included are portraits of father Roland.

The Allport family resided in Mosman, living at 6 Middle Head Road from the early 1900s.

These photographs are now linked to the National Library’s Trove online resource, and can be found by doing “an image search for “Allport Mosman” or click here

In 1906 the hotel and pleasure grounds were purchased by Sydney Ferries Ltd. A large circular swimming enclosure was built, a boatshed, and a tramway from the wharf to the hotel. According to Rob Sturrock in A pictorial history of Mosman, Sydney Ferries described the circular baths as the huge amphitheatre baths which circle out into Chowder Bay are the largest and most unique swimming baths in the Southern Hemisphere with space to accommodate over 3000 spectators.
