Sydney v Emden, a century later

At Bradleys Head, Mosman, overlooking Sydney Harbour, the HMAS Sydney mast commemorates the victory over the German light cruiser Emden at the Cocos Islands the 9th of November 1914. 100 years ago today.

J. G. Hircoll: a soldier with a Mosman connection?

Hircoll’s sister wanted him remembered in Mosman but there is little evidence of a local connection, except for the Roll of Honour circular she completed for the Australian War Memorial, and an in memoriam notice placed by his “loving friends A. Casson and Mr and Mrs H Buckman and family” of Mosman.

AIF graffiti links Mosman to Naours

Mosman man Allan Allsop, stretcher bearer and despatch rider, made his mark in the underground city of Naours in Picardy, France. Thanks to Charles Lee, who is documenting the hundreds of soldiers’ names written on the walls, we have a photo.
