His WW 1 record is not on the NAA website just a note to say his records was combined with his WW 2 records. I am not sure what you have on this man but I will send some of what I have anyway.

  • Born; 30 Sept.1896. Leith Sct.
  • Father; Frederick Victor Whitehead
  • Enlisted in the Australian Army as a Cadet Lt. In 1913 and attended Royal Military College from 12 March 1914.
  • Transferred to AIF 04/04/1916 and embarked 1st May 1916 per ‘Benalla” from Sydney.
  • Served in 9th Machine Gun Coy, as Lt.
  • Commander 23rd MGC. Awarded MC in Sept. 1918 for actions in August 1918.
  • After War was in CMF and in 1937 was Lt. Col 1st Machine Gun Regiment
  • Enlisted WW2 1940.
  • May 1940 Commander 2/2 MGC
  • Feb. 1942 Commander 2/23 MGC.
  • Brigadier General Commanmder 26th Brigade Sept. 1942. Was commander at 2nd El Alamein 1942.
  • Returned to Aust. 1943. Commanded 26th Brigade at Landing at Lae, New Guinea.
  • Commander of Australian landing at Tarakan Borneo May 1945
  • Relinquished command 10 Dec. 1945 RTA 12 Dec. 1945.
  • Commander CMF 2nd Armoured Brigade, Nov. 1947
  • Aide de Camp Governor General Jan. 1949 to May 1952
  • Commander of Australian CMF Contingent to Coronation of Queen Elizabeth
  • Retired from Army 1954
  • Manager Shell 1945 – 1956
  • 1956 – 1961 Arbitrator, Conciliation and Arbitration Commission
  • Died; 23/10/1992 Melbourne
  • He married Marguerite J Forsyth Sydney 1926
