Raymond Edward Smith lived in Cowles Road, Mosman until at least the time of the death of his mother in 1908, which left him orphaned. When he enlisted in the AIF in March 1915 he named his brother, William George Smith, of Cremorne as his next of kin. He left Australia with the 18th Battalion and landed at Gallipoli on 16 August 1915. He was wounded in action 9 days later. After treatment at Mudros in Greece and Malta he rejoined his unit in Egypt in January 1916. As part of the reorganization of the AIF, he was transferred to the 54th Battalion which arrived in France in June 1916. He was again wounded in action on 20 July 1916 when his unit was at Warloy-Baillon preparing for the Battle of Pozieres. He was evacuated to England for treatment. After his discharge from hospital in January 1917, he had a number of temporary postings in England, including a year with the Provost Corps, before his departure for Australia in January 1919. He arrived in February 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in April 1919. [JSB]
