Joined the AIF at the age of 16 years and 8 months.

He served with the 19th Battalion at Gallipoli and in France.  He later transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Company.

During World War 2, he served with the 7th Australian Division Provost Company.  He was captured in 1941 at Crete(?) and held as a German prisoner of war until the end of the war in 1945.
