Served with the 18th Battalion at Gallipoli and in Egypt, Belgium and France. He was wounded in action (bayonet wound left thigh) on 20 September 1917. For his "conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty" on that day he was awarded the Military Cross. The recommendation for the award describes the circumstances:
This officer on Septr (sic) 20th 1917, near Westhoek (Belgium) by his splendid example led his men to the attack with great vigor. He very skilfully took command and handled his Company after the Coy. (sic) Commander had been killed in the advance. He placed his guns and then rushed a strong point at Garter Point, almost single handed, and was responsible for its capture with 14 prisoners. Up to the time he was wounded, by his fine example, he kept up the mens (sic) spirits under heavy fire and attended to the supply of ammunition, etc. He established and garrisoned an important tactical position. He was wounded while visiting his post.
