At HANEBEKE WOOD on 20/9/17 he lead his platoon against a strong fortified enemy position with great calmness and daring and although he suffered heavy casulaties through enemy shell-fire he reorganised the remainder and achieved his objective. He then personally led a squad of men against an enemy M.G. posiion which had been missed in the first advance, and captured the gun and killed the crew. Afterwards while his men were consolidating their position under heavy shell fire, he set a fine example by his courage and coolness until he was finally severely wounded in the head.
