Born: 10 August 1888
A labourer who enlisted in the AIF on 12 July 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 30 September 1915.
He was initially allotted to the 1st Battalion on 6 January 1916 but was transferred to the 53rd Battalion on 14 February as part of the reorganisation of the AIF. The 53rd arrived at Marseilles, France on 19 June and moved immediately to Estaires in northern France.
He was wounded in action on 19 July 1916 at the disastrous Battle of Fromelles, France where more than two thirds of the 53rd became casualties. He was evacuated to hospital in France for treatment and convalescence.
He rejoined his unit on 4 September 1916. He was wounded (right chest) in action for a second time 25 September 1917 as the 53rd was moving into position for the start of the Battle of Polygon Wood the next day. After initial treatment in France, he was evacuated to England for further treatment and convalescence. He rejoined the 53rd Battalion then near Hamel, France on 17 May 1918.
He embarked for Australia on 21 March 1919 and arrived on 9 May then was discharged from the AIF on 2 July 1919. [JSB]
