A butcher who enlisted in the AIF on 20 July 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 9 November and arrived on 11 December 1915.
He joined the 30th Battalion on 15 February 1916. The Battalion arrived at Marseilles, France on 23 June 1916 and moved to northern France. He was wounded (right arm) in action on 20 July at Fromelles where the Battalion suffered more than 30% battle casualties. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.
He rejoined the 30th on 26 October 1916 at Flers, France but less than two weeks later was evacuated to England suffering from trench feet. Following his recovery he was transferred to the nascent 61st Battalion on 23 March 1917. When this unit was disbanded while still in England in September 1917, he was transferred back to the 30th Battalion and rejoined it in Belgium on 14 November.
He was again wounded (right thigh and ankle) in action on 8 August 1918, the first day of the Hundred Days Offensive when his unit attacked eastward from near Proyart, France. He was initially evacuated to hospital in France and then to England on 30 August.
He embarked for Australia by hospital ship on 31 March 1919 and arrived on 18 May. He continued to receive treatment after his return and was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 10 August 1920. [JSB]
