A bank clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 21 August 1914. He embarked for Egypt with the 4th Battalion on 20 October and arrived on 4 December 1914.
He landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and on 1 May was wounded (forearm) in action. He returned to duty after treatment at Gallipoli. He was evacuated to Egpyt on 25 May suffering from typhoid. Following treatment and convalescence, it was decided that he should return to Australia for "a change".
He was Mentioned in Despatches "for conspicuous gallantry or (sic) valuable service during the period from 25th April to 5th May 1915".
He embarked on 29 August and arrived on 1 October then went on extended leave. He returned to duty on 5 February 1916 and following officer training was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 20 May 1916.
He embarked for England on 7 October and arrived on 21 November 1916. He joined the 54th Battalion on 13 February 1917. He was evacuated on 28 July to hospital in France then England with tonsillitis. He rejoined his unit on 24 January 1918. On 11 October he was transferred to the 14th Training Battalion in England.
He embarked for Australia on 8 July 1919 and arrived on 1 September then his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 8 February 1920. [JSB]
