Variously self described as a bushman, seaman and labourer who enlisted in the AIF three times. He first enlisted as Henry Stearn on 17 August 1914 and embarked for Egypt with the 13th Battalion on 22 December and arrived on 1 February 1915.

The 13th Battalion landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. In May he was evacuated to Lemnos, Greece with a sprained ankle. He rejoined his unit on 1 August then was evacuated to Egypt two days later suffering from haemorrhoids.

He embarked for Australia on 3 September 1915 then was discharged from the AIF on 28 January 1916.

He enlisted in the AIF for a second time as Herbert Stearn on 12 May but was discharged medically unfit on 4 July 1916.

He enlisted in the AIF again as Herbert Stearn on 10 July 1916 and embarked for England on 22 August arriving on 13 October 1916.

He rejoined the 13th Battalion 2 July 1917. He was evacuated to hospital in France on 25 July suffering from haemorrhoids. After convalescence he was sent to a holding unit where he was medically assessed as only capable of base duties. He was transferred to England on 20 September 1917.

He embarked for Australia on 10 January 1918 and arrived on 3 March then was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 8 April 1918. [JSB]
