A poultry farmer who enlisted in the AIF on 5 July 1916. He embarked for England on 14 June and arrived on 25 August 1917.

After further training at the Australian Army Medical Corps Training Depot in England, he joined the 2nd Field Ambulance on 8 October 1917 at Oxelaere, France. He was detached to the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) on 11 November 1917. On 1 March 1918 he transferred to the 2nd FAB as a Gunner. He was awarded the Military Medal. The recommendation for the award was as follows:

"Near Proyart (France) on the night of 20th August, 1918. Whilst going into action his Battery was suddenly enveloped in an extremely heavy barrage. Two men were badly wounded and fell from their horses. Gunner Ray, in face of the heavy shelling immediately dressed their wounds and carried them to a place of safety. By his gallantry and initiative he saved the lives of these men and set a fine example of courage to the whole of the Battery."

He embarked for Australia on 16 June 1919 and arrived on 4 August then was discharged from the AIF on 3 September 1919. [JSB]
