A plumber who enlisted in the AIF on 13 July 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 5 October 1915.
On 16 February 1916, he was allotted to the 55th Battalion. On 10 March, he was transferred to the 14th Machine Gun Company which arrived at Marseilles, France on 25 June 1916 then immediately moved to northern France.
He was evacuated to hospital in France on 1 September 1917 suffering from pyrexia of unknown origin. He was evacuated to England on 2 October for treatment and convalescence.
He rejoined his unit, now absorbed into the 5th Machine Gun Battalion, in France on 8 May 1918. On 7 July he was transferred to the 5th Division Signals Company. He was wounded (contusion) in action on 29 September and evacuated to hospital in France for treatment and convalescence and rejoined his unit on 18 November.
He embarked for Australia on 28 February 1919 and arrived on 13 April then was discharged from the AIF on 10 June 1919.
On 5 June 1920, he enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) which had occupied German New Guinea in 1914. He embarked for Rabaul on 12 June and arrived on 22 June then was attached as a plumber to the Public Works Department. He embarked for Australia on 8 April 1921 then was discharged from the ANMEF on 25 April 1921. [JSB]
