A provision merchant who enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) on 11 August 1914. He embarked on 19 August 1914 with the ANMEF sent to occupy German New Guinea territories.
The Army component of the ANMEF landed at Rabaul on 12 September.
He was discharged from the ANMEF on 4 March 1915. He then enlisted in the AIF on 25 March 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 19 June 1915.
He joined the 19th Battalion at Gallipoli and was wounded (left arm) in action on 7 November 1915. He was evacuated initially to Malta and then to England for treatment and convalescence.
He embarked for Australia on 11 March 1916 and arrived on 22 April then was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 20 August 1916. [JSB]
