A stock agent who enlisted in the AIF on 22 August 1914. He embarked for Egypt with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) on 20 October and arrived on 5 December 1914.
The 2nd FAB made its initial landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and his 5th Battery landed on 26 April. The unit was fully withdrawn from Gallipoli by 19 December and arrived back at Egypt on 26 December 1915.
Following further training in Egypt, the 2nd FAB arrived at Marseilles, France on 28 March 1916 and two days later moved to Le Havre in northern France. However, he was admitted to hospital on arrival in Marseilles. He rejoined his unit on 17 July at Puchevillers, France.
He was evacuated to hospital with rheumatism on 18 September 1916. After initial treatment in France he was evacuated to England for further treatment and convalescence. It was decided that he should return to Australia due to malaria and rheumatism.
He embarked on 8 April 1917 and arrived on 9 June then was discharged from the AIF on 27 July 1917. [JSB]
