An engineer's draftsman who enlisted in the AIF on 25 September 1915. He enlisted using the surname of his stepfather Rochlitz John Maclean who kept residences at Mosman and Dee Why. He embarked for Egypt on 11 October.

He joined the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column on 12 November 1915. The unit arrived at Marseilles, France on 2 April 1916 and immediately moved to Le Havre in northern France.

On 15 May he was transferred to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade which at the time was near Fromelles, France. On 14 August he was evacuated firstly to hospital in France and then to England for treatment and convalescence after accidently breaking his right arm.

He was discharged to duty on 11 October and sent to a holding depot where he was to convalescence and train to regain fitness to return to his unit. In December he got malaria and subsequently in March 1917 he was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

He embarked for Australia on 21 July 1917 and arrived on 18 September then was discharged medically unfit on 16 October 1917.

His stepfather was the father of James Noel Maclean. [JSB]
