Edwin Mayhew Brissenden enlisted with the rank of Corporal on the 27th of March 1916 with the 3rd Divisional Cycling Battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on the 18th of May 1916. After disembarking in England he was transfered to the 3rd Divisional Headquarters on the 6th of August and promoted to Acting Sergeant (without pay) on the 15th of August. Edwin was again transfered on the 9th of November to the 34th Battalion and Taken on Strength before proceeding overseas for France on the 25th of November 1916.
After being marched in from England Edwin was again promoted and received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant on the 20th of December 1916 and then Lieutenant on the 16th of March 1917.
