A journalist who enlisted in the AIF on 16 September 1915. He was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 25 May 1916 and embarked for England on 25 October, arriving on 28 December 1916.

He joined the 35th Battalion on 21 June 1917 and was wounded (right eye) in action at Messines, Belgium on 1 July when a shell exploded in his dugout. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.

He rejoined the 35th on 26 February 1918 when it was in a rest area in Belgium north of Armentieres, France. He was wounded (left leg) in action on 5 April at the end of the desperate defence of Villers-Bretonneux, France from a massed German attack, and was again evacuated to England.

He rejoined his unit on 25 July when it was in reserve at Vaire-sous-Corbie, France. On 23 September he given command of the battalion's A Company which he held until December 1918.

He embarked for Australia on 8 August 1919 and arrived on 25 September then his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 28 December 1919. [JSB]
