A farm labourer who enlisted in the AIF on 24 August 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 18 November with the 5th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) and arrived on 21 December 1915.

The Brigade landed at Marseilles, France on 25 March 1916 and immediately moved to Le Havre in northern France. He was wounded (shell shock) in action on 19 August 1917 near Ypres, Belgium. He was evacuated for treatment and convalescence in France.

He rejoined the 5th FAB on 6 October 1917 then was wounded (right hip and groin) for a second time on 9 November when several batteries of his unit, then at Westhoek, Belgium, were put out of action of German shelling. He was evacuated to Wales then England for treatment and convalescence. On 12 June 1918, he married Emily Florence Cox from his home town of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.

He was transferred to the establishment of the 1st Australian Command Depot at Sutton Veny, England on 29 October 1918.

He embarked for Australia with his wife on 9 December 1919 and arrived on 2 February 1920, then was discharged from the AIF on 2 April 1920. [JSB]
