A salesman who enlisted in the AIF on 2 October 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 20 April 1916.
After transiting in Egypt he landed at Marseilles on 14 June 1916 then proceeded to the 4th Australian Division Base Depot in northern France for deployment. He was originally designated as a reinforcement for the 49th Battalion but was allotted to the 13th Machine Gun Company on 31 August. At the time the unit was moving into the front line at Pozieres, France.
On 1 April 1918, his unit was absorbed into the 4th Machine Gun Battalion. He was wounded (gassed) in action 27 April 1918 near Villers-Bretonneux, France and evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.
He rejoined his unit on 7 October in a rest area near Cavillon, France. As it turned out, it had seen its last action of the war.
He embarked for Australia on 4 May 1919 and arrived on 12 June then was discharged from the AIF on 20 December 1919. [JSB]
