A clerk with the NSW Department of Public Works who enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) on 11 August 1914.

He embarked for Rabaul on 19 August 1914 as a member of F Company of the ANMEF's Tropical Unit sent to seize German territories to the north of Australia. After his return to Australia he was discharged from the ANMEF on 18 January 1915.

He enlisted in the AIF on 24 March and embarked for Egypt with the 19th Battalion on 25 June, arriving on 23 July. The battalion landed at Gallipoli on 21 August and he remained there until he was evacuated on 8 December for treatment in Egypt for diarrhoea subsequently diagnosed as chronic colitis. It was decided he should return to Australia.

He embarked on 3 March and arrived on 30 March 1916. Following further treatment and convalescence he was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 26 August 1916. [JSB]
