A printer who enlisted at Adelaide in the AIF on 4 September 1914. He embarked with Headquarters, 3rd Infantry Brigade for Egypt on 21 October and arrived on 2 December 1914.
There is a gap in his service records but he would have been at Gallipoli with the 3rd Brigade which landed there on 25 April 1915.
On 17 June 1916 he was transferred to the 9th Battalion when it was in the front line near Petillon, northern France. He was wounded (left arm) in action on 21 August at Pozieres, France and was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence. It was decided he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 13 February and arrived on 12 April 1917 then was discharged medically unfit from the AIF in South Australia on 25 June 1917.
He moved to Mosman and enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) on 13 August 1918. He embarked for Rabaul on 29 October and served there until he embarked for Australia on 23 May 1920. He was discharged from the ANMEF on 15 August 1920. [JSB]
