A commercial agent who enlisted in the AIF on 27 August 1914. He embarked for Egypt with the 4th Battalion on 20 October and arrived on 3 December 1914.

He landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and was wounded (shoulder) in action five days later. He was evacuated to Egypt and then England for treatment and convalescence. He then was posted to various training units in England during which time he was promoted to Second Lieutenant.

He rejoined the 4th Battalion on 3 October 1916 when it was in the support lines near Dickebusch, Belgium. Between March and September 1917 he was seconded to the 1st Training Battalion in England.

He was wounded (neurasthenia/shell shock) in action on 4 October 1917 when his unit was attacking the German lines at Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium. A shell burst had buried him. He was evacuated on 8 October to England for treatment and convalescence.

He embarked for Australia on 21 December 1917 and arrived on 12 February 1918. His appointment in the AIF was terminated on 22 March 1918.

He is the uncle of Gordon Keith and Hunter Freeman. [JSB]
