A cook who tried to enlist in the AIF but failed on medical grounds. However, he enlisted in the Army on 29 May 1916 and was posted to Mosman between then and 17 November when he was discharged in order to enlist in the AIF three days later. He embarked for England on 7 February and arrived on 11 April 1917.

While training in England he was allotted to the 63rd Battalion which was disbanded in September. He was then allotted to the 19th Battalion and later the 45th Battalion. Due to his fitness level being below standard, he did not ready to join the 45th Battalion in France until 6 June 1918 when it was in the front line at Daours about seven kilometres north of Villers-Bretonneux. He was evacuated to England on 22 September with an infected toe. At the time the 45th was resting at Tincourt Wood east of Peronne, France.

He embarked for Australia on 8 January and arrived on 20 February 1919. He was discharged from the AIF medically unfit on 2 April 1919.

He enlisted for Special Service on 17 May 1919 as a guard on a ship carrying German deportees to Germany. The ship departed on 27 May and arrived at London on 23 June 1919. He embarked for Australia on 19 August and arrived on 9 October and was then discharged on 24 October 1919.

He was a cook on the Titanic when it sank on 4 April 1912. [JSB]
