A public service clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 20 August 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 30 December 1915 as reinforcement for the 3rd Battalion. He embarked from Egypt, unattached to a unit, on 29 March and arrived at Marseilles, France on 4 April 1916.

He was transferred to the Base Depot in Etaples, France before being transferred on 14 August to a training course with the Machine Gun Corps. He returned to the Base Depot in December 1916 where he remained until transferred to the 2nd Australian Command Depot, a convalescence unit, in England on 13 February 1917.

On 4 April he was attached to AIF Headquarters with the Australian Army Pay Corps but less than three weeks later he was hospitalised for seven weeks. His fitness level was downgraded to C1, garrison duties in England. On 16 July 1917 he joined the establishment of the 29th Training Squadron, Australian Flying Corps at Shrewsbury. His fitness level was further downgraded to C3 (sedentary duties) in August 1917 due to debility and anaemia.

He married Sheila Frances O'Brien at Shrewsbury, Shropshire on 31 August 1918.

He embarked for Australia with his wife on 19 January and arrived on 28 February 1919. Following his return he was assessed as requiring hospital treatment. He was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 19 December 1919. [JSB]
