A labourer who enlisted in the AIF on 4 February 1914. He embarked for Egypt with the 17th Battalion on 12 May 1917 and arrived on 12 June 1915.

Following further training in Egypt, the unit embarked for Gallipoli on 16 August and landed on 20 August 1915. After the evacuation of Gallipoli, the 17th returned to Egypt on 9 January 1916.

He moved with the 17th to France, arriving at Marseilles on 23 March 1916 and then went to northern France. While on leave in England, he was admitted to hospital in January 1918. In April he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.

Following training in England, he joined the 4th Machine Gun Battalion in France on 8 June 1918. He was wounded (left thigh) on 8 August near Villers-Bretonneux at the start of the Hundred Day Offensive. His left leg was amputated the next day and he was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.

He embarked for Australia on 19 April and arrived on 10 June 1919 and then was discharged from the AIF on 10 August 1919.
