A student teacher who enlisted in the AIF on 10 January 1916. He embarked for England on 9 April 1916 and arrived on 16 June 1916.
Following further training, he joined the 30th Battalion in France on 1 October 1916. On 8 December 1916 his feet were accidently scalded with hot water. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence. Following further training, he rejoined the 30th Battalion on 26 October 1917.
He was wounded (gassed) in action on 24 April 1918. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence. It was subsequently alleged that this was self-inflicted due to him not wearing his gas mask when required and as a result should be court martialled. This did not occur as he did not return to his unit.
He embarked for Australia on 21 March and arrived on 16 May 1919 then was discharged from the AIF on 23 October 1919. [JSB]
