A cabman who worked from the Mosman cab rank and who enlisted in the AIF on 1 November 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 17 December 1915.

He was allotted to the 54th Battalion on 14 February 1916. After further duty including manning the defence of the Suez Canal, the 54th arrived in France on 29 June 1916.

On 20 July 1916 he was wounded (shoulder and leg) in action at Fromelles, France. He was evacuated to England for treatment, convalescence and re-training. He rejoined the 54th on 16 January 1917.

He was again wounded (abdomen, chest and jaw) in action at Bullecourt on 15 May 1917 when there was a very heavy German bombardment and full frontal attack on the 54th's front line. He died of his wounds two days later at the 29th British Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers, France.

He was the brother of Nicholas Clarke. [JSB]
