Born: 8 October 1895
A clerk at Gosford Court House who enlisted in the AIF on 21 September 1915. He and his twin brother, Leonard Chippindall, embarked for England on 11 May 1916 and arrived on 10 July 1916.
He joined the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column in France in late November 1916 and was transferred to the 7th Field Artillery Brigade on 7 July 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery at Zonnebeke, Belgium on 12 October 1917. The recommendation for the award is as follows:
"At Zonnebeke on the 12th October 1917 during the attack on the Passchendaele Ridge Gunner Chippindall maintained a gun in action under very difficult and dangerous conditions. This Battery entered this operation very much depleted in personnel, practically none of its old NCOs being left and its detachments composed very largely of reinforcements quite new in the Battery. It was necessary in several cases to make gunners do the work of NCOs and Gunner Chippindall was in charge of a detachment, almost entirely composed of Trench Mortar personnel who were attached as reinforcements. Although in great pain at the time from swollen feet this young gunner refused to leave his duty. On several occasions the Battery came under very heavy shell fire, and it was almost entirely owing to his leadership that a partially untrained detachment was able to satisfactorily keep a gun in action throughout the entire operations."
He embarked for Australia on 29 May 1919 and arrived on 25 July 1919. He was discharged from the AIF on 8 September 1919. [JSB]
