A grazier who enlisted in the AIF on 12 May 1915. He embarked for Egypt in command of A Squadron, 12th Light Horse Regiment (ALH) on 22 June 1915 and arrived on 31 July 1915.
He landed with his Squadron at Gallipoli on 29 August 1915 and was put under the command the 1st ALH. He was evacuated on 10 November suffering from paratyphoid. He embarked for Australia for "three months change" on 3 January 1916 and arrived on 5 February 1916.
He made a full recovery and departed for Egypt on 8 July 1916 and arrived on 11 August 1916. After a period of training he rejoined the 12th LHR on 17 October 1916.
He was twice wounded (right arm and left abdomen) in action on 19 April 1917 at the Second Battle of Gaza. For his actions on that day he was promoted to Brevet Major in the Citizen Military Force and awarded a Mention in despatches. The recommendation for the award was as follows:
"Gaza operations 19-4-47. Conspicuous gallantry and general good work in the field. After being wounded he returned to the firing line and continued to lead his Squadron. Two hours later he was severely wounded and was carried off the field."
After hospital treatment and convalescence in Egypt, he returned to his unit on 21 July 1917 and continued to served with the 12th ALH for the rest of the war.
He embarked for Australia on 17 July 1919 and arrived on 30 August 1919. His appointment in the AIF was terminated on 4 December 1919. [JSB]
