A farm hand who enlisted in the AIF at Beverley, Western Australia in January 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 19 April 1915.

He joined the 11th Battalion at Gallipoli on 4 June and was wounded (left ankle) in action on 1 August 1915. After evacuation and treatment, he returned to his unit on 17 September and remained at Gallipoli until the evacuation in December.

He was wounded (left ear) for a second time on 30 May 1916 when his unit was in the front line at Petillon, France. It was heavily bombarded, with 36 killed, 6 missing and 61 wounded. He was evacuated to England for treatment. He returned to his unit in October 1916.

He was wounded (right arm) for a third time on 6 May 1917 when his unit was under sustained attack by the Germans near Noreuil, France. He was again evacuated to England and returned to his unit on 31 August 1917.

He was wounded (right arm) for a fourth time on 3 June 1918 when the 11th Battalion participated in a successful attack on the German front line at Mont-de-Merris in northern France. Once again he was evacuated to England where he remained until he embarked for Australia on 6 November 1918. He arrived at Fremantle on 24 December 1918 and was discharged from the AIF in July 1919.
