A clerk who enlisted in the AIF in January 1915. He departed Sydney on 17 March 1915 and initially served with the 13th Battalion at Gallipoli from July until 10 August 1915. He was knocked down by a shell explosion while waiting to be evacuated suffering dysentery. He was evacuated to England for treatment of the dysentery and nervous debility resulting from the explosion.
He returned to his Battalion in Egypt in March 1916. As part of the reorganisation of the AIF in April 1916, he was transferred to the 45th Battalion which arrived on 8 June 1916.
He was wounded in action (mustard gas) on 10 February 1918 and was evacuated to England where he remained until 11 December 1918 when he departed for Australia. Prior to departure he was transferred to the Army Pay Corps and was made the Pay Sergeant on board the ship.
He arrived at Sydney on 2 February 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 11 April 1919 as medically unfit. [JSB]
