John Albert Hookman was a plasterer working for F Hagen Ltd at King Street, Sydney prior to his enlistment. He joined the 4th Battalion in Egypt and went on to serve in Gallipoli and France.
He was initally captured with others by a German raiding party at the Le Barque trenches near Bapaume on the morning of 2 March 1917. He was wounded by a German hand grenade during subsequent action by his unit during which the raiders released their captives. He died soon after.
His uncle, John Hookham (1864-1914), who was also a plasterer, lived at Thora, Raglan Street (Balmoral end), Mosman. [JSB]
