A clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 17 March 1916. He embarked for Egypt on 14 April then embarked for England on 29 July arriving on 9 August 1916.

He joined the 56th Battalion then in the front line near Fleurbaix, France on 24 September 1916. On 22 October he was evacuated to hospital in France then England suffering from an inguinal hernia. Following treatment and convalescence, he rejoined the 56th Battalion then in a rest area at Ebblinghem, France on 18 August 1917.

He was wounded (shell shock) in action on 24 September when the 56th was in the front line at Polygon Wood, Belgium. The Battle of Polygon Wood commenced two days later. After initial treatment in France, on 9 January 1918 he was transferred to hospital in England. He was discharged from hospital in March in anticipation of his return to Australia.

He embarked on 5 April 1918 and arrived on 1 June then was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 31 August 1918. [JSB]
