A commercial traveller who enlisted in the AIF on 3 February 1915 by understating his age by five years in order to be well under the age limit of 45. He embarked for Egypt on 13 April 1915.

He joined the 13th Battalion at Gallipoli on 13 July and remained there until evacuated to hospital on 18 September suffering from enteric. He was eventually evacuated to England in late October 1915 for treatment and convalescence.

On 15 March 1916 he was transferred to the staff of the 4th Training Battalion. During 1917 he had short term postings with various holding units until 7 November when he joined the permanent staff of the Overseas Training Brigade at Longbridge Deverill. In March 1918, he was transferred back to the nominal roll of the 13th Battalion and sent to the 1st Command Depot at Sutton Veny where, eventually, he was medically assessed for return to Australia.

He embarked on 24 August 1918 and arrived on 9 October then was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 17 December 1918. [JSB]
