A painter and decorator who enlisted in the AIF on 12 June 1916. He embarked for England on 17 October 1916 and arrived on 9 January 1917.
On 11 May 1917 he joined the 1st Pioneer Battalion which was in a rest area at Bancourt, France. On 25 May he was evacuated to hospital in France and, after further periods in hospital and convalescent depots, was eventually diagnosed as having "debility". He was evacuated to England on 29 July and then it was decided that due to his health he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 26 September and arrived on 25 November 1917 then was discharged medically unfit on 6 February 1918. [JSB]
