Born: 31 March 1887

A wool classer who enlisted in the AIF on 24 August 1914. He embarked for Egypt with the 4th Battalion on 20 October 1914 and arrived on 4 December.

The battalion landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was evacuated to Mudros, Greece on 9 June for treatment of gastritis. He returned to Gallipoli on 4 August. He was evacuated again to Mudros for dental treatment on 26 October and returned on 6 November. He returned to Egypt following the withdrawal from Gallipoli on 29 December 1915.

Following the reorganisation of the AIF, he was transferred on 16 February to the 56th Battalion which arrived in Marseilles, France on 29 June 1916. He injured his ankle and was hospitalised there for seven weeks before he moved to a depot unit Etaples in northern France for further convalescence and training. He rejoined his unit on 7 November at Ribemont-sur-Ancre, France.

He was evacuated on 5 December to hospital in France and then England suffering from trench feet. Following treatment and convalescence he had further training before returning on 3 July 1917 to the 56th Battalion which was in a rest area at Warloy-Baillon, France.

On 19 July 1918 he joined the permanent cadre of the 14th Training Battalion at Tidworth, England.

He embarked for Australia on 3 December 1918 and arrived on 27 January then was discharged from the AIF on 29 March 1919. [JSB]
