A cleaner who enlisted in the AIF on 13 January 1917, aged 17 years; overstating his age by two years. He embarked for England on 7 February and arrived on 11 April 1917.
He joined the 36th Battalion on 1 September when it was out of the front line in northern France. He was transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion on 15 April 1918 and was wounded (gassed) in action two days later at Ribemont-sur-Ancre, France. He and 38 others in his unit were gassed that day. He was evacuated initially for treatment in France, then sent to England for further treatment and convalescence. He was discharged from hospital in December 1918 and remained in England until his return to Australia.
He embarked on 30 October and arrived on 15 December 1919. He was discharged from the AIF on 20 August 1920.
His next of kin was his grandmother Ellen Cusack (nee Moroney), mother of John Joseph, Michael Edward, Patrick Francis and William Sydney Cusack who are therefore his uncles. [JSB]
