A collector for the NSW Technological Museum who had been a member of the 1911-1914 expedition to Antarctica led by Douglas Mawson. He enlisted in the AIF on 9 September 1914 then embarked for Egypt with the 13th Battalion on 22 December 1914 and arrived on 1 February 1915.

The 13th Battalion landed at Gallipoli on the night of 25/26 April and he was wounded (right ankle) in action on 28 April by a sniper's bullet. He was evacuated and then sent to England for treatment and convalescence. He was discharged from hospital in August.

Subsequently, he was attached to the part of AIF Headquarters processing wounded Australian soldiers who had been discharged from hospital. In May 1916, he was assessed as being unfit for general service but fit for home (Australia) service.

He embarked for Australia on 24 June 1916 and arrived on 12 August. Following further treatment at Randwick Military Hospital, he was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 5 September 1916. [JSB]
