A farmer who enlisted in the AIF on 15 November 1915, aged 48, by understating his age by four years. He embarked for Egypt on 11 March 1916.
He arrived at Marseilles, France on 18 May, then after a period in a holding unit in northern France joined the 20th Battalion on 30 July in the front line at Pozieres, France. Days later he was wounded (head) in action at Pozieres when his unit was under intense shelling on 5 August. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence. It was decided that due to his age he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 4 May and arrived on 4 July then was discharged from the AIF on 10 August 1917. [JSB]
