William Joseph Ham

Biographical Summary:
An accountant who enlisted in the AIF on 6 June June 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 30 September 1915.
He was allotted to the promoted to the 17th Battalion on 10 January 1916 and promoted to Corporal in March 1916. The battalion proceeded to France later that month. It landed at Marseilles on 23 March and immediately went to northern France.
He was promoted to Sergeant in August 1916. He commenced officer training in Cambridge, England in April 1917 and returned to his battalion as a Second Lieutenant on 1 September 1917.
He was severely wounded in action during the taking of Broodseinde Ridge near Ypres on 9 October 1917. He was evacuated to England for treatment of the gunshot wound to his left shoulder. He returned to his battalion on Christmas Day 1917 and remained with it for the rest of the fighting.
He married Edith Violet Adams on 23 December 1918 at Totnes, Devon. From early January 1919 he was attached to AIF Headquarters as Regimental Transport Officer Waterloo Station and then for Headquarter AIF Depots in the UK.
He embarked for Australia on 15 November and arrived on 29 December 1919. His appointment in the AIF was terminated on 11 April 1920. [JSB]
