Biographical Summary:
Enlisted in the AIF in May 1915. After officer training he was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 1 December 1915. He held a Bachelor of Engineering from Sydney University. After leaving university he had worked in the mine at Cobar, NSW and prior to enlisting he was working with the NSW Department of Public Works.
He was appointed to the 1st Australian Tunnelling Company with which he served in France, and rose to the rank of Captain. He was awarded the Military Cross. [JSB]

Ronald Butler Hinder, M.C., B.E., Assoc.M.Inst.C.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Captain, 1st Australian Tunnelling Coy., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 30th May, 1915, and sailing 20th February, 1916, with Mining Corps (later 1st Tunnelling Coy.), having joined it on formation, served at Hill 60 and elsewhere until demobilisation. Promoted second-lieutenant, 1st December, 1915; lieutenant, 1st January, 1916; captain, 11th January, 1918. Awarded M.C. 30th May, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at East Maitland High School.
