Biographical Summary:
A clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 21 April 1915 and embarked for Egypt on 9 August 1915.
He joined the 18th Battalion at Gallipoli on 29 September and remained there until the withdrawal in December and returned to Egypt on 9 January 1916. He landed at Marseilles, France on 25 March with his battalion which proceeded immediately to northern France.
He was awarded the Military Medal “for conspicuous gallantry in action near Warlencourt (France) on the night of 24/25th February (1917). He displayed the utmost daring and judgment in leading his patrol, was the first to enter Butte Trench and then led a party of bombers to attack an enemy party in Gird Support Trench.”
He was promoted in the field to Second Lieutenant in May 1917 and was wounded (chest) by machine gun fire on 15 May 1918 when leading a party digging a communications trench in the Ville-sur-Ancre Sector south of Albert, France. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence. It was decided that he should return to Australia.
He embarked on 24 August and arrived on 24 October 1918. Following further treatment his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 23 March 1919. [JSB]
