Biographical Summary:
A clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 18 April 1915. He embarked for Egypt with the 20th Battalion on 25 June and arrived on 26 July.
The battalion immediately commenced intensive training and on 16 August embarked for Gallipoli and landed on 22 August. It was fully withdrawn from Gallipoli by 20 December and returned to Egypt on 9 January 1916.
He was transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Company on 8 March. He arrived at Marseilles on 23 March and immediately went to northern France. He was wounded (left cheek) in action on 29 July at Pozieres, France and was evacuated to Boulogne, France for treatment and convalescence.
He returned to the his unit on 10 September. He was wounded (right shoulder, arm, leg) in action on 14 November at Flers, France. He was evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence. He returned to France in June 1917 but returned the next month to England, before he could rejoin his unit, after being reclassified as only fit for base duties.
He embarked for Australia on 19 October and arrived on 16 December 1917 then was discharged from the AIF on 22 January 1918. [JSB]
