John William Axtens

Biographical Summary:
Initially served with the Australian Naval and Miltary Expeditionary Force in the Pacific from August 1914 to March 1915.
He then enlisted in the AIF in June 1915 and arrived in Egypt in December 1915. He received his commission with the 8th Machine Gun Company in March 1917. He was severely wounded in action on 19 July 1917 at the Battle of Fromelles and was evacuated to England for treatment where he remained until November 1916 when he departed for Australia for "6 months change".
He embarked at Melbourne in late June 1917 to return to England. It was not until January 1918 that he rejoined the 8th Machine Gun Company. He was again wounded on 20 April 1918 while his unit was near Villers-Bretonneux but remained on duty. [JSB]
