Biographical Summary:
An Able Seaman with the Royal Australian Navy at the outbreak of the war. He served on board HMAS Pioneer between 3 August 1914 and 7 November 1916, then HMAS Brisbane from 8 November 1916 until 20 May 1918.
He enlisted in the AIF on 23 May 1918 under the pseudonym, John Porter (his mother’s maiden name). He was re-attested on 17 September 1918 under his correct name. Initially, the RAN had treated him as a deserter but he was later formally discharged which would explain the correction of his name.
He married Nellie Riddle of Harbour Street, Mosman on 28 September then embarked for England as a reinforcement for the 57th Battalion on 5 October 1918 arriving on 5 December.
He served with various depot units in England.
He embarked for Australia on 12 July 1919 and arrived on 21 August then was discharged from the AIF on 5 December 1919. [JSB]
