Biographical Summary:
Fourth son of Mr and Mrs James McKern.
He was wounded in the leg at Lone Pine on 6th or 7th Aug. He could not be got out of the trenches immediately owing to congestion but was ultimately seen carried out laughing and talking. – Captain A. J. G. Simpson, 4. A.I.F.
454 Corporal Howard Taylor McKern, 4 Battalion, AIF: agriculturalist; of Mosman, NSW; born Arncliffe, NSW; educated at Summer Hill (NSW) Public School, at Hurlstone Agricultural High School, and at Wagga Wagga (NSW) Experimental Farm; was a public school cadet and latterly a member of the League of Frontiersmen; joined the AIF on 23 August 1914; died at Malta on 15 August 1915, of wounds received at Lone Pine on August 6; age at time of death, 22 years 3 months.
