Biographical Summary:
A son of then Prime Minister Billy Hughes, and a student at Hawkesbury Agricultural College who enlisted in the AIF on 23 March 1916. He embarked for England on 1 May and arrived on 10 July 1916.
He joined the 9th Machine Gun Company on 22 November 1916. He was awarded the Military Medal “for bravery in the field” on 24 June 1917. He was accidently injured (lacerated left leg) on 3 April 1918 and evacuated to England for treatment and convalescence.. He commenced officer cadet training in September 1918 but did not complete the course.
He embarked for Australia on 25 January and arrived on 14 March then was discharged from the AIF on 8 May 1919. [JSB]
