Biographical Summary:

A clerk who enlisted in the AIF on 23 August 1915. He embarked for Egypt on 2 November 1915.

On 16 February 1916, he joined the 55th Battalion which arrived at Marseilles, France on 29 June 1916 and immediately moved to Thiennes in northern France. He was awarded the Military Medal. The recommendation for the award was as follows:

“At the attack on Doignies (France) on 2nd April 1917, this signaller, in conjunction with Signaller Buckeridge, established communication from Battalion Headquarters to the attacking companies at Doignies, and maintained same throughout the fight, under heavy artillery barrage and machine gun fire. His energies were unceasing in keeping communication established under most trying circumstances. This signaller has rendered very good service since the Battalion has been on the Somme, and has always set a good example to his comrades by his gallantry.”

He embarked for Australia on 7 April 1919 and arrived on 25 May then was discharged from the AIF on 18 July 1919.

He enlisted in the Australian Military Force on 29 December 1939 and served mainly with Headquarters, Eastern Command at Victoria Barracks, Paddington. He died, while still serving, on 24 September 1947 at Concord Repatriation General Hospital while being treated for an enlarged thyroid. [JSB]
